Today only a few ruins are left from the Moorish castle, built by the Arabs on a rock and overlooking the valley of the Quarteira river. Paderne was finally taken from the Moors in 1248.

The castle is built of rammed earth (Port.: taipa), a mixture of mud, chalk, lime and aggregate that sets like concrete. The tower is connecte with the main building by an passageway.

The chapel Nossa Senhora do Castelo, erected in the 14th. Century, was the parish church of Paderne until 1506
