Village in the municipality of Lagoa on the EN125, reknown for its tiles and potteries
Porches is a village (vila) and parish (freguesia) in the municipality (concelho) of Lagoa in the district of Faro (Algarve). The village is situated on the national road EN125 between Alcantarilha and Lagoa. The surrounding area is known for its viniculture and for numerous potteries (olarias), where the clay found in the area is used to produce artistic pottery and painted tiles (azulejos). In the centre of the village the older houses cluster around the elevated church. This was built in 1882 on the foundations of an older one which was destroyed during the earthquake of 1755. Take a step back in time when exploring the narrow streets. The village was only populated in the 16th Century, the older settlement, now called Porches Velho was located closer to the coast. The first evidence of human occupation in this area dates back to Prehistoric Times: a menhir from the Neolithic period (5-4.000 B.C.) found nearby is now on display in the front garden of the convent Convento de Sao José in Lagoa. The rocky coast between Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro is especially fascinating. Dramatic rock formations with hidden grottoes and caves, broken up with sandy bays and protected beaches dominate the scenery. A place of special interest is the little chapel Nossa Senhora da Rocha, situated on a narrow cliff. The international school at Porches on the EN125 is one of the best facilities of its kind in the Algarve.

27holes golf course of the Pestana Golf Resort between Carvoeiro and Lagoa
Location and access The Pestana Golf Resort with the Gramacho and Vale da Pinta courses is situated away from the coast between Carvoeiro and Lagoa. The undulating terrain is liberally dotted with carob, fig, palm, almond and olive trees. It is less than a five kilometre drive from the En125 in the centre of Lagoa and around seven from the A22 motorway (exit 6). Golf course While designing and constructing the golf courses, Pinta and Gramacho, Ron Fream and Nick Price, did the impossible, they combined the picturesque and slightly hilly course with the artistic fairways and incorporated the ancient olive trees, some 600 years old, all over the courses. The use of existing features of the land, like outcrops of rock and dry stone walls have been augmented by well positioned bunkers and lakes. These hazards, combined with the shaping of the fairways and greens, have produced a wonderful array of challenging but fair golf holes. From the first tee shot to the pitch to the final green, the player must not only strike the ball and putt well, but also utilize the best strategy, to produce a good score. Experienced golfers will certainly acknowledge that they have played a very fine golf course with a testing par of 71 and a more than sufficient length of 6107 metres.
